Bandung has many religious people. It is relatively tolerant of different groups. Even during Ramadan one can eat at restaurants during the day. Bandung is the place where some foreign missionary groups send their missionaries to learn Indonesian before the go out in the bush.

  • Agnostic
I don't know what to tell you.
  • Atheist
You are on your own. Be careful who you tell about your (lack of) religion. In the past, communism was linked to atheism in Indonesia. Where that left all the capitalist atheists is a good question. All Indonesians are required to have one out of the five official religions - Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu.
  • Buddhist
There is a study center in Cisarua. Look for the big stupa. There are many temples in Bandung of the Chinese style. They are called vihara.
  • Christian
There is an International Church, conducted in English. Contact Warren Reeve at wdr@bdg.centrin.net.id. There are many local Catholic and protestant churches in Bandung.
  • Hindu
There is a Balinese Hindu temple in Cimahi. There is a community of Indians (ethnic and national) in Bandung.
  • Jewish
Not an officially recognized religion in Indonesia, Judaism is little known by the local population.
  • Muslim
There are thousands of mosques and many Muslim religious schools in Bandung.
