A rough, tough cowboy walks into a saloon in the old West and says: "Give me a whisky and give it to me in a dirty glass." This is a helpful attitude to take when trying to enjoy the cuisine of Indonesia. Sanitary conditions are not usually what they are in the industrialized West. Nevertheless, many expats eat and drink everything, everywhere, and seldom suffer any ill effects. Also, Bandung is not really the best place in the world for great food but it can be found with some experience.

  • The author's favorite, Padang food. Quality varies greatly depending on location and time of day. Takes some exploration to find the good places. Recommended:
    • Simpang Jaya - Jl. Asia-Africa, Jl Dago, and Jl Pasteur
    • Malah Di Cubo - Train station angkot terminal
    • Kapau Jaya - Jl. Dipati Ukur (see review below)
  • Pecel Lele - fried catfish and rice with carbonara sauce and garnish. In warung tenda (roadside stalls) just about everywhere. Look for a painting of a catfish on the flaps of the stall. Recommended:
    • Across from Dago angkot terminal in the evening
  • Pizza
    • Warung Laos - Jl. Eykman across from the Cihampelas McDonald's tel. 2030516
    • Sheraton
    • Prince restaurant - Jl. Eykman
  • American fast food - McDonald's, KFC, etc. are all over the place these days.

Reviews from Indonesia Wine Club members and other bandungexpat readers:

Tuscany Restaurant at the Sheraton Hotel Jl. Ir. H. Juanda No. 390 Tel: (62-22) 250-0303.
I am always a bit apprehensive about hotels' restaurants in Indonesia. However, there is always exception, and this is one of them. Love the grill chicken, and the dessert. Easy going atmosphere. Give them a try.

The Cellar
Novira and Adi, good friends from Bandung took us to this newly opened wine lounge. Yes, Bandung has a wine lounge. The list was not impressive. You have seen the same winery in Jakarta. Its the atmosphere that counts. The place is spacious and open. What a perfect
day, in Bandung, good company, good wine. Ahh...

Kapau Jaya Jl. Dipati Ukur
Large portions of nicely spiced Padang food. Best if you get there before 1230pm when the flies really take over. Rice quality varies. Lately, sometimes, they've tried to save money on rice by using a really bad quality. I like the fried big fresh-water fish, perkadel jagung, daun singkong, Coca-Cola with ice in a dirty glass. Free napkins.
Food 2/5 (3/5 if you get there while it's still hot), Service 2/5, Ambiance 1/5 (has 25" TV - recommend watching Patroli - "police forced to shoot motorcycle thief in leg"), Price $/5 - by EB

The Peak Jl Desa Karyawangi Ciwaruga Km 6.8 No. 388 Tel (62-22) 270-0759, 278-5225 www.thepeakresortdining.com

1. This restaurant has a splendid view of Bandung and I suggest you make a reservation on weekend before visit the restaurant as they very busy. - by  M

2. Hot...hot...hot... This place is hot, and with further development it could become even hotter. For me though the development around it is dizzying. Hope it does not start to turn it into what feels like a bus stop. Was told in the weekends a reservation is a must. Nice place to visit with friends. Food is not impressive.

Cafe Invio Jl. Ciliwung 9  Tel: 022 7234165 ext 24
Love the decor of this small cafe. Has the New York air of simplicity around it. Adi, the Executive Chef is daring. Unusual ingredients with the right mix.

Citrus The San Gria Hotel, jl Cipaku VII/19 Tel: (62-22) 278-5751.
The second dinner of the Bandung Wine Dinner series. Love the resort feel of the restaurant, airy, relaxing. The wait staffs need more wine training, they seemed confused, and hesitant.
